The Lost Abbey Helps Veteran Homelessness
Several of our brewers and packaging staff proudly served this country in the Armed Forces, and that's something we take great pride in. As the cold winter months start to creep in and the temperatures begin to dip, our thoughts go to those that fought bravely for The United States but have since fallen on hard times.
Beginning now till the end of January, we'll be teaming up with the San Marcos Veteran Center and collecting canned food and clothing (warm gear, new socks and underwear) at The Lost Abbey Tasting Room for our US Veterans in need.
The New Lost Abbey Safety Glasses
With the safety of our employees always on the forefront of our minds when it comes anything inside the brewery, it's no surprise that we're constantly looking to not only keep them out of harms way, but also comfortable. Enter in our friends at SPY.
We've had a great relationship with SPY over the years. Collaborated on beers and events (The SPY Bad-Ass Ale and BWR) and are always available to hang with each other for the impromptu beer at their SPY Carlsbad HQ or right here at the brewery.
So this year had a new idea, what if SPY could create new safety glasses for our brewers and packaging line guys... And SPY did not disappoint. They created The General. A certified ANSI Z87.1 lens on a bad-ass pair of frames. The High Velocity impact test required by these standards and endured by these bad-ass optics is a 1/4 inch metal ball blasted at them at more than 100 mph. The high mass impact test is a 1.1 lb. pointed projectile dropped on them from more than 4 feet up. If eyewear passes these tests, it means the lenses did not eject or shatter and the frame did not break.

The First IPA from The Lost Abbey - Merry Taj IPA
San Marcos, CA, -- Already in the Holiday Spirit, The Lost Abbey will be releasing its latest addition to its seasonal lineup, Merry Taj IPA. With a release date preceding Thanksgiving each year, Merry Taj IPA will be an extra-hoppy Holiday IPA, a first on The Lost Abbey roster. With an already established Holiday beer like Gift of the Magi (Strong Bier de Garde w/ Brett), The Lost Abbey wanted to give its brewers (who already make exceptional hoppy beers) a chance to do something with this year’s new hops. Merry Taj IPA was able to take advantage of some of the freshest hops available, harvested in September, and will feature five different varieties (Chinook, Centennial, Amarillo, Cascade, Simcoe) used throughout the brewing process.Merry Taj IPA begins with an aroma of crisp floral notes of citrus rind and tropical fruit. Initial flavors of clean sweet caramel malt will give way to a spicy bitterness on the finish thanks to the addition of the Simcoe hops. Merry Taj IPA will not be bottled, only kegged, to get the beer out to consumers as quickly as possible. The name “Merry Taj IPA” pays homage to the holiday celebrations going on from sea to sea, encapsulating the hope of a new year as we inch closer and closer to 2014. It’s also a play on a term from the wine world, Meritage, which loosely translated means: A damn fine blend (of hops in this case).Though Belgian-inspired beers dominate The Lost Abbey portfolio, it’s not the only focus of the brand. The brewing team at The Lost Abbey are certified Hop-Heads at heart and being able to imagine and craft an IPA for the brand was a vision that seemed just out of reach…until now.“We were very excited for the opportunity to make an amazing IPA and even more stoked once we tasted it” said Matt Webster, Lead Brewer of The Lost Abbey. “The sweet caramel notes and spicy finish make Merry Taj IPA a great addition to The Lost Abbey lineup and a perfect holiday beer”.Look for Lost Abbey’s Merry Taj IPA on-tap at great beer establishments beginning in mid-November. About Port Brewing / The Lost AbbeyFounded in 2006, Port Brewing and The Lost Abbey produce an extensive line-up of continental and American- inspired ales and lagers. Under the direction of visionary brewmaster and co-founder Tomme Arthur, the brewery has garnered dozens of awards in its seven year history including the 2007 Great American Beer Festival Small Brewery of the Year, The 2008 world Beer Cup Champion Small Brewery and the 2013 Champion Brewery at the San Diego International Beer Festival. Where's the Best of Show Trophy?
In 2012, The Lost Abbey received the Best of Show trophy at the San Diego International Beer Competition for Carnevale Ale. In celebration, we had each brewer spend a day with the trophy. From surfing and yoga to finding a new drinking buddy, The Best of Show trophy had quite a year with The Lost Abbey crew. With the festival returning again next weekend (June 21-23) we thought now was the perfect time to showcase its adventures.

Meet Ben Barnett aka Obi Wan
Born a Capricorn in the lovely state of Oregon, Ben Barnett’s biggest claim to fame was when he was on the show “The Bachelorette” (Monday’s on ABC). Ben only lasted through one “Group Date” after regaling everyone with the middle names of every Jedi in the Star Wars Universe. After that “Obi-Wan” discovered his love for craft beer… and Strawberry Rhubarb pie. Not sure how those are connected, but now he’s here with The Lost Abbey Family.1. Meet Michelle B!
When I first started to interview Michelle, she would only answer my questions with questions. I asked her "How are you doing today" and she would reply with "Do you enjoy watching paint dry?". This went on for about an hour, I kept asking different questions and she kept asking me if I enjoyed watching paint dry. After downing two Hop 15's, I decided I would answer her question... "No, Michelle, I don't enjoy watching paint dry". She responded with "Good, you've passed the test, now we may begin the interview". Then she impersonated Shang Tsung from the movie Mortal Kombat and yelled "It Has Begun!". CLICK HERE if you don't know what I mean.1. What is your go-to Karaoke song and would you sing it for us? Video: Making 10 Commandments Ale
As part of our continuing video series, we're proud to present the making of 10 Commandments (or 10C as we like to call it), our Belgian-style dark farmhouse ale. Brewed with caramelized raisins, rosemary and honey, and finished with the wild yeast, brettanomyces, it's one of our favorites both to make and consume. We hope you like it too. Enjoy!
