UCSD Extension Panel Discussion: Is Beer In Your Career?
Tomme and peers talk beer & careers!
"Is Beer in Your Career?"What are the career opportunities in San Diego’s burgeoning brewing industry? Job seekers will learn the answers from a panel of experts who will converse about why San Diego has become such a nationally renowned region for craft beer production and where the professional brewing industry is headed. The panel discussion is being captured for broadcast by UCTV Career Channel as part of the opening of the San Diego History Center exhibition Bottled & Kegged: San Diego’s Craft Brew Culture, which explores the ebb and flow of beer production in the San Diego region. The exhibit features many hands-on interactive elements that help explain: the brewing process, how San Diego County brewers achieve such expansive flavor profiles, and the science behind matching beers with food.

Sede Vacante Release Details
Inspired by the shroud of mystery that envelopes the Vatican City during the Papal Conclave, The Lost Abbey presents their newest creation, Sede Vacante (SEH-deh vah-CAHN-teh). Created from a cloak and dagger blend of variously aged barrels previously stored in the catacombs of the brewery, Sede Vacante is a marvel of equal parts flavor and mystery. The creation of the beer itself was veiled in secrecy; the formulation written on black papyrus was burned soon after completion.
An extremely limited amount of bottles, less than 100 cases, will be available beginning Saturday, March 23rd beginning at 10am at the Lost Abbey tasting room. With its small-batch size, Sede Vacante’s lore will only be intensified by its fleeting availability.Sede Vacante is a blend of Barleywine aged in Cognac barrels and Brandy barrel-aged Angel’s Share and at packaging came in at 15% abv. A contemplative beer with substantial depth, Sede Vacante imparts tones of dark fruit and vanilla, with a warming finish from the Cognac. The strongest beer to emerge from The Lost Abbey, portions of the beer spent almost 5 years in a barrel. Sede Vacante can be enjoyed immediately or cellared till the next Papal Conclave, however long that may be.Sede Vacante Release Details:- When: Saturday, March 23rd, 2013. In celebration of the Papal vacancy, The Lost Abbey announce their newest creation "Sede Vacante"
San Marcos, CA, -- Inspired by the shroud of mystery that envelopes the Vatican City during the Papal Conclave, The Lost Abbey presents their newest creation, Sede Vacante (SEH-deh vah-CAHN-teh). An extremely limited amount of bottles, likely less than 100 cases, will be available beginning March 23rd. With its small-batch size, Sede Vacante’s lore will only be intensified by its fleeting availability.“It’s not very often we get to fete the arrival of a new Pontiff” said Tomme Arthur, Director of Brewery Operations at The Lost Abbey. “We felt this was an exceptional event worthy of a new release from our Lost Abbey Barrel
Program.”Sede Vacante is a blend of Barleywine aged in Cognac barrels and Brandy barrel-aged Angel’s Share and at packaging came in at 15% abv. A contemplative beer with substantial depth, Sede Vacante imparts tones of dark fruit and vanilla, with a warming finish from the Cognac. The strongest beer to emerge from The Lost Abbey, portions of the beer spent almost 5 years in a barrel. Sede Vacante can be enjoyed immediately or cellared till the next Papal Conclave, however long that may be.It’s been over 500 years since the last time a pope resigned, Pope Gregory XIII in 1415, and in accordance with Vatican Law, Sede Vacante (from Latin meaning “vacant seat”) occurs. Without a leader of the Holy See, Sede Vacante becomes a period of reflection of the prior Pope and joy and excitement for the selection of a new head of state for the Vatican City. The artwork for Sede Vacante, as with all Lost Abbey bottles, was done by local artist Sean Dominguez and focuses on the image of an empty gilded chair illuminated from above and the assembly of Cardinals looking to fill the void.Sede Vacante took full advantage of The Lost Abbey’s extensive oak-aging barrel program. “Cognac barrels were chosen for their complexity and depth, helping lend flavors of intensely ripe fruit and some essence of black strap molasses” said Gwen Conley, Director of Production and Quality Assurance. “The flavors derived from the Cognac barrels gave the beer its elegance and darkness worthy of the empty Vatican seat”With over 850 barrels in the Oak-Aging Barrel program, unique and small-batch permutations have been possible and produced some of The Lost Abbey’s more sought after beer such as Cuvee De Tomme, The Veritas Series, Duck Duck Gooze and many others.Sede Vacante will be sold on a limited basis for $35 per 750 ml cork finished bottle at the Port Brewing / Lost Abbey Brewery in San Marcos. Because of the limited amount, bottles will be sold on a first-come first-serve basis, with the on-sale beginning March 23rd at 10am.

GABF Recap: Four Medals and Abbey Found
For those of you who missed it, our annual pilgrimage to the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) landed our brew crew a total of four medals, and resulted in one really lucky guy landing himself an Ultimate Box Set.
GABF Medals:
- Bronze – Track 8 (Category 14: Experimental Ales and Lagers)
- Bronze – Hot Rocks Lager (Category 16: Indigenous Beers)
- Silver – Red Poppy (Category 19: American Style Sour)
- Gold – Saint’s Devotion (Category 70: Belgian Style Ale)
Last Friday, the day before the awards, Tomme posted his thoughts on all the beers we entered. If you didn't read it, check it out. In hindsight the DOBO was pretty dead on.Congrats to our whole brew team on an awesome showing (and second highest medal count) at the GABF!
Abbey Got Found
While the brew boys (and girl) were lapping the stage, out in downtown Denver we were playing "The Hunt For Lost Abbey" – a sort of "Where’s Waldo" with craft beer. Players were given clues where to stop to "find Abbey." if they checked at the right location(s), they had a chance to win Lost Abbey wearables, schwag, and beer. The first to check in at all seven locations and find Abbey, won their very own Ultimate Box Set.
Abbey was ultimately "found" first on Saturday afternoon at Falling Rock Tap House, by Denver resident (and future brewer) Michael Kearns. Congratulations to Michael and everyone who played. And a big note of thanks to our check-in venues who helped us out -- The Cheeky Monk, Euclid Hall, Falling Rock, Freshcraft, Lucky Pie and Taphouse, and Star Bar. Make sure to drop by and say hello to them whenever you’re in Denver.
Ultimate Box Set Release updates
As we enter the home stretch of our Ultimate Box Set releases, we thought this would be a good time to update you on the logistics of the last few releases as well as the complete Boxed Set itself. Here’s what you need to know
- Track 10 release -- is slated for release on October 20, 2012. Once again, we’ll be opening the tasting room doors at 10:30a.m. As with all Box Set releases this beer must be consumed on site. Unopened bottles may not be carried out. More details on this release will be posted on The Lost Abbey website the week before the release.
- Track 11 release – Track 11’s release has been moved up by one week to November 10, 2012 to coincide with San Diego Beer Week and give us a little more breathing room between it and the release of Track 12 and the full Ultimate Box Set collection. As always we’ll post more details on our website as we near the release date.
- Final Lottery Drawings – The 3rd lottery drawing (for those who purchased Tracks 7 - 9) will be held this week. If you’re a winner you’ll be notified shortly thereafter. Because of the short amount of time remaining between now and the full collection release, we’ll also be doing lottery drawings immediately following the release of Track 10 and following Track 11. Winners of the Track 10 lottery will be notified by November 11, winners of the Track 11 lottery by November 16.
- Track 12 release - Track 12 will release on Saturday, November 24, 2012 in conjunction with the Full Box Set Collection release. As with previous Box Set bottle releases, the tasting room will open to the general public for bottle sales at 10:30 am. We’ll have complete details on Track 12 available shortly after Track 11’s release in November.
- Full Box Set Collection release – First off, we’re pleased to announce that we’re bumping the total number of complete collections from 350 to 500. When, we originally planned this release back in 2011, we estimated that we’d have enough to release 350 individual bottles each month and have 350 left over to release as part of the complete collection. As it turns out, we were lucky with the barrel yields so we’re able to increase the total number of complete sets to 500. As a result, we’re also able to draw an additional 150 lottery winners (names drawn will be divided equally among each track) to reach the full 500 set allocation. There will be no additional complete sets available to the general public the day of release.
- Lottery Winner Pickup - We will issue the Full Collections to the lottery winners on Thanksgiving Weekend – Saturday, November 24 and Sunday, November 25, 2012. You will be contacted in early November to schedule a private appointment to come in and pick up your Ultimate Box Set. As of yet, we don’t have a price for the full collection (all the pieces aren’t done quite yet), but we anticipate having that information along with payment options and all the details of what will be included in the Ultimate Box Set in Mid-October. Please keep an eye out for the email notice.
In the meantime, if you have any questions, we’ve set up an Ultimate Box Set hotline and email address. You can telephone (925) 269-7381, or email us at LABoxSet@gmail.com.
Play The Hunt for "Lost Abbey" at GABF
The Game's afoot! Click here to follow along
Abbot (aka: "Abbey") has run off to Denver and now he's lost. Help us find where he's hiding at the Great American Beer Festival and you could win free beer, Lost Abbey wearables and even your own Ultimate Box Set collection.
If you're going to the Great American Beer Festival in Denver this October, we've got some extracurricular activities to help you explore Denver's craft beer scene and even win some cool Lost Abbey stuff, including a complete Ultimate Box Set collection!
The Game: A live version of "Where's Waldo"
Abbot the Monk (we call him "Abbey") can't wait for the Great American Beer Festival to start, so he's heading out a few days early to explore Denver and its thriving craft beer scene. The problem is, Abbey's terrible with directions (and maybe enjoys the pubs a bit too much), so he's bound to get lost. We need your help to find him before it's time to go home on Sunday, October 14.Abbey will be issuing clues as to his location in downtown Denver. We need you to follow his trail and track him down. If you do, you can win lots of great stuff including some free beer, Lost Abbey wearables, and the Grand Prize, one of the super limited (there's only 500), "Ultimate Box Set" barrel-aged beer collections.
How to play:
Using a series of clues, you're going to trace Abbey's footsteps through downtown Denver. Go to each spot where Abbey's been -- there's a total of 7 – and you'll ultimately be lead to Abbey himself. Along the way you'll have a chance to win a number of prizes, but if you're the first to find him on Saturday afternoon, October 13, you'll win the Grand Prize! The steps:
- You'll need some technology: A mobile phone or iPad/Tablet, a Twitter Account and a FourSquare Account
- Follow @findabbey on Twitter and "friend" him on FourSquare
- Beginning Thursday, October 11 at 12 noon Mountain Time, Abbey will broadcast a clue as to his location. Figure out where he is, go there and check-in on Foursquare. (Make sure to "Tweet" your check-in and include @findabbey.) If you happen to run into Abbey (we'll tweet some clues as to what he looks like), you can win an instant prize.
- After your check-in you'll receive another clue as to Abbey's next location. Figure out where that is, go there and check-in again.
- Ultimately, you'll need to check-in at a total of seven locations. The seventh – and final – location will be Abbey's final stop. If you're the first to find him and show that you've checked-in at all seven locations, you'll win your own Ultimate Box Set collection.
The Rules:
- You must follow @findabbey on Twitter and friend him on Foursquare (this is how we track and verify the check-ins)
- For the smaller prizes you can check-in at as many or as few locations as you like. If you catch Abbey there, you can win free beer, t-shirts and other Lost Abbey schwag. To win the Grand Prize, however, you must check-in at all seven locations on Foursquare. (This will be verified.)
- Feel free to enlist the help of others (either at GABF or on Twitter, Foursquare, Facebook, etc.) to solve the clues – but you must physically check-in at each location to win.
- Play as fast or as slow as you like. Game play begins on Thursday, October 11, but it doesn't end until Saturday, October 13. (All the locations are within walking distance around downtown Denver.)
- On Saturday afternoon, Abbey will be at the final location. Check-in at all seven locations and be the first to find him, and you win the Grand Prize*.
- You have to be 21 years or older to win.
Follow along even if you're not playing!
Even if you're not attending GABF or playing the game, you can still follow the player's progress on the web. We'll be posting the check-ins and results on the Lost Abbey website here:http://www.lostabbeydev.wpengine.com/hunt-for-abbey-2012/You can also follow along on Twitter, Facebook or Google Plus. Look for the hashtag #findabbey.* The Ultimate Box Set collection

Port Brewing & The Lost Abbey lands a monster eight medals and Best in Show at San Diego International Beer Festival
Anyone familiar with American craft scene knows that San Diego County is basically what Olympus was to the ancient Greeks -- populated by a collection of some of the mightiest brewers and breweries on the planet. This, of course, is a double-edged sword.Yes, the region is filled will great brews, but it's also filled with a Pantheon of brewers, judges and professional critics who have already "been there and done that," making them an especially difficult lot to impress. So it came as more than a little surprising this past weekend when Tomme & Co. spent the afternoon doing their best Spartan army imitation running around the awards platform at the 6th Annual San Diego International Beer Festival. If you're not familiar with the SD International Beer Festival, while only six years old, it's quickly grown to be one of the largest festivals anywhere with nearly 140 breweries from 15 countries and 300-odd beers in competition -- including all of San Diego's brewing Titans and a whole bunch of young, up-and-coming heroes that the rest of the craft brewing world will no doubt soon hear of.In all, the Port Brewing / The Lost Abbey Brew Crew landed a total of eight medals and the coveted "Best in Show" award (for Carnevale). Given the all the incredible brewers and breweries we competed with, it was a high honor indeed. We just got the word from the DOBO and our hospitality manager, Kevin Hopkins, on the final arrangements for our Anniversary party this weekend. Needless to say, if you're not attending, you're going to miss the event of the weekend. Here's the updates:
- Gourmet Food Truck Triumvirate:In past years we've served up barbeque and pizza courtesy of our in-house pit masters and cousins at Pizza Port. This year, however, we're cranking it up a notch and inviting in a trio of our favorite gourmet food trucks to literally create an outdoor food court filled with three continents of incredible eats.Food Trucks Include:
- Casanova Fish Tacos
- Red Oven Pizza
- Slow Cal BBQ
- Epic Tap List:Not only will all 26 taps in the tasting room be flowing, but in addition to the regular line-up Port Brewing/The Lost Abbey liquid awesomeness, we're also loading the line-up with our biggest collection of limited-edition wonders ever. Specialty Taps:
- The Angel’s Share - Bourbon Barrel (v. 2011) - 3 tickets/ea
- Anniversary Ale (v. 2012)

And for the first time ever on tap:

So if you tried to get tickets last week, but were told that we were sold out, fear not! We've released a new batch of tickets for both sessions. You will want to hurry, though -- while we did make more tickets available, it's not that many more, so we expect them to sell out quickly once again. (» buy tickets here.)

The Lost Abbey "faut être deux" at World Beer Cup
Brewery grabs a gold for Carnevale and the bronze for Gift of the Magi in the French and Belgian ale categories
Call us "L'Abbaye Perdu" because the 2012 World Beer Cup was here in San Diego last week, and we walked away with not one, but two medals in the French and Belgian Ales categories. Carnevale took a gold in the French & Belgian Saison category (it also took a gold at the Great American Beer Festival in 2009 for the same), while Gift of the Magi landed a bronze in the French & Belgian Ale category. All in all not a bad showing for a bunch of guys (and gals) from San Diego. All we have to say to our brewers is -- a votre santé!» For a full list of World Beer Cup winners, click here.

Box Set Track 3 Releases Saturday, March 17
Double Sour Special Hours: Red Poppy Releases Same Day
This Saturday, March 17, 2012 will mark the release of our third track in our now famed Ultimate Box Set series.
Track 3, a tribute to AC/DC’s head-banging anthem Hell’s Bells, is a pale sour and the second of our Remixed Tracks. A blend of Mellow Yellow and Phunky Duck barrels, the beer details (blend, ABV, liner notes, album art, etc.) are on the website here.
special notes: Red Poppy will also be released on March 17, so we are doing things a bit differently. PLEASE READ BELOW FOR MORE INFO.
- Extended Tasting Room Hours: Because we are expecting larger than usual crowds (two releases and St Patrick's Day), we will be opening our doors from 9am to 7pm. The MIHO Gastrotruck will be onsite with breakfast specials from 8am - 11am and a special lunch MENU from 11am -7pm.
- Beer Reservations: We know many will want both Track 3 and Red Poppy, so we will begin IDing and wristbanding people for the beers at 8am. If you arrive early (i.e., before 9am) to ensure you get bottles, please line up on the loading ramp leading into the tasting room. As with previous releases you will be able to pay in line and be issued a ticket/receipt that ensures your allotment.
- Allotments and Restrictions:
- Track 3 - As with all Box Set releases, the beers must be consumed on site, same day. Bottles may not be carried out. The bottles are 375ml and are $15 each.
- Red Poppy - As with past releases, Red Poppy is also 375ml bottles; $15 each with a six bottle per patron limit.(Yes, you can take Red Poppy away with you).
- Special Taps: Red Poppy will be on draft as 4 ounce tasters only. Tasters are $3 each.
Because this event happens to coincide with St Patrick's Day, we expect larger that usual crowds after noon. If you wish to avoid the crowds and be assured of getting bottles of Track 3 / Red Poppy, we recommend that you arrive earlier rather than later.
Carnevale Masquerade 2012

Box Set Track 1 Releases This Saturday
This Saturday, January 21, 2012 will mark the release of the first track in our ultimate Box Set, kicking off a year-long series of super-limited beer releases inspired by those great anthem rock tunes of our youth. (Feel free to wave your lighters in the air... for you younger kids that's what we waved at the concert before cell phones with big screens.)Because the Box Set beers are so limited, the release process will be different than the usual, so we've posted everything you need to know on the Box Set page here.On the same page you'll also find details on Track 1, (aka Runnin' With the Devil), which is one of the "Fresh Tracks". It's aged in wine barrels and spiked with Cab Sauvignon grapes and our own Brett cultures. Definitely a devilish brew...Side note: because of some labeling "issues" with Track 1 (we'll let you guess what they were), this release has a special label that will appear only on this version of the brew. The Full Box Set release of Track 1 will have a different label in line with the others.
