It’s been a quiet few months since our last post. Apologies as we got busy working to keep the lights on and beers flowing. The beers flowed so well that last week Inferno won its second Gold Medal this year besting The Other Strong Ale group at the Great American Beer Festival and backing up the same category and medal we secured at the World Beer Cup back in May. Congrats to our team of Artisans for continuing the winning ways.
Just a pair of Gold Medal Beers.
This past spring we hosted an awesome event here at the brewery and celebrated the pickup of the Duck Duck Kriek 20th Anniversary Beer celebrating The Lost Abbey and our 20 years of operating. We had teased at the time that there would be a 30th Anniversary Beer later in the year to celebrate Tomme’s milestone of being a craft brewer/operator.
Well our friends, it’s time to let the gato out of the bag. We have produced not one but two limited edition 30th Anniversary Beers to celebrate this occasion. In keeping with things we do well, we have blended a set of Blonde Sour Beers and if that wasn’t enough we found some incredible Non Sour Barrel Aged goodies and blended them together.
Let’s start with the Sour Blend. For the past 20 years, The Lost Abbey has made some incredible non fruited sour beers, Duck Duck, Cable Car and even some Veritas bottlings (before the fruit). Each of these blends revealed a signature house culture/character which always manifested in Stone Fruit and White Grape aromatics and textures. So many of our friends and customers opine about the way a Lost Abbey sour beer tastes and is perceived and they always mention these two attributes.
With that in mind, we’re leaning in and doing something we’ve never done. It’s time to pull from these great brands and push them together. The 3oth Anniversary Sour Blend culminates with the following beers marrying together for a one time only bottling. They are as follows:
Foeder Base Beer, DDG 2022, Cable Car 2018, A dash of A Still Small Voice and to balance the beer some newish oak blonde sour for tannic support.
The Non Sour beer is inspired by one of the more obscure bottles we produced back in 2013 when there was a papal vacancy and an empty seat left behind by the Pope. The beer featured a fiery Cognac barrel aged release and was bottled at 15%. A true Barleywine of epic proportions, Sede Vacante has matured into one of the most expressive Non Sour Barrel Aged beers we have ever produced.
When we went digging for the Blonde Sour beers needed to produce the first blend, our team unearthed a small stash of kegs that were not originally used in the production of Sede Vacante but were part of that Cognac program. We married the deep burgundy base beer to some newer Bourbon Barrel Aged Angel’s Share and a portion of Angel’s Share base beer. The result is a contemplative sugar spun collective that nods to our love of deep malt and even Tootsie Roll like Cocoa and Toffee sensibilities.
And that’s how we came to have not one but two! 30th Anniversary Barrel Aged Beers. Discounted Pre-Sale Bundles will go live on Thursday October 29th at 10:00 AM PST through our online portal at lostabbeybrewing.com. The Cuvee will be bundles of 3 bottles and When Angel’s will be units of 2 (due to low volume of beer produced). All remaining individual bottles will be live in the same store starting Monday, November 1st at 10:00 AM PST. These are extremely low case total Anniversary Beers. Please be ready when the time comes.
Lastly, we will be hosting a pickup party for these bottles in November and are working to confirm the timing. It will be announced before the beer goes on sale on Thursday October 29th. Look for the details on the web page for purchasing.
